From paying school fees to buying a boda boda ride or sending money home to the village, Mobile Money is part of daily life in Uganda. If you have just got a new line, or you have never opened a wallet, this guide explains how to register for Mobile Money in Uganda on MTN and Airtel, what you need to bring, and how to keep your account safe from the first day.
What Mobile Money is and why you need it
Mobile Money is an electronic wallet linked to your phone number. Once registered, you can deposit cash with an agent, send money to other people, withdraw cash, pay bills such as electricity (Yaka) and water, buy airtime and data, and pay at many shops and online businesses. You do not need a smartphone. A basic phone works through USSD menus, and smartphone users can also use the official apps.
The two main services are:
- MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), on MTN lines, reached by dialling *165# or through the MoMo app.
- Airtel Money, on Airtel lines, reached by dialling *185# or through the My Airtel app.
You can register for both if you have SIM cards from both networks. Many people do, because sending money within the same network is often simpler.
What you need before you register
Prepare these items so the process goes smoothly:
- A registered SIM card in your own name. SIM registration in Uganda is linked to identification, so the line must already be registered to you. If it was registered by someone else, sort that out at a service centre first.
- Your National ID or National Identification Number (NIN). For Ugandan citizens this is the main document used. Foreign nationals and refugees should ask at a service centre which identification documents are accepted for them.
- A working phone, charged, with the SIM inserted.
- A PIN in mind. Think of a number that is easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess. Avoid your birth year, 1234 or 0000.
Requirements, including the minimum age for opening a wallet, are set by the providers and can change. If you are not sure, check the MTN Uganda or Airtel Uganda website or ask at a service centre.
How to register for MTN Mobile Money
You can register in two main ways.
At an agent or MTN service centre
- Visit an MTN service centre or a registered MTN MoMo agent. Look for official branding and ask if they do new registrations.
- Present your National ID. The agent will check that the details match the SIM registration.
- The agent submits the registration. You will receive an SMS confirming that your wallet has been created or asking you to complete the next step.
- Dial *165# and follow the prompts to set your secret PIN. Never let the agent or anyone else choose it for you or watch you type it.
By self-registration on your phone
- Dial *165# on your MTN line.
- If your line is eligible, the menu will offer an option to register or activate Mobile Money.
- Follow the prompts, confirm your details and create your PIN.
- Wait for the confirmation SMS. If the menu does not offer self-registration, visit a service centre or agent.
How to register for Airtel Money
The Airtel process is very similar.
- Make sure your Airtel line is registered in your name with your National ID.
- Dial *185#. If self-registration is available for your line, choose the option to register and follow the steps.
- Alternatively, visit an Airtel shop or a registered Airtel Money agent with your National ID and ask them to register you.
- Set your secret PIN privately when prompted.
- Wait for the confirmation SMS, then dial *185# again to check that the menu now shows Airtel Money services.
On a smartphone, you can also download the official My Airtel app or the MTN MoMo app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Only install apps published by MTN Uganda or Airtel Uganda.
Your first transactions
Once registered, start with small, simple steps so you get comfortable:
- Check your balance. Use the menu option for "My Account" or "Check Balance" and enter your PIN.
- Make a deposit. Go to an agent with cash, give them your number and the amount. Confirm the name that appears on their screen is yours. You will get an SMS confirming the deposit. Count your money and check the SMS before leaving.
- Buy airtime or a data bundle from your wallet through the menu. It is a good low risk first purchase.
- Send a small amount to a family member and ask them to confirm it arrived. Always check the recipient's name before entering your PIN.
Charges for sending and withdrawing depend on the amount and change from time to time. To see the current tariffs, check the charges option in the *165# or *185# menu, look in the app, or visit the provider's website. Some transactions also attract a government levy, which is shown on the provider's tariff guide.
Keep your Mobile Money account safe
Mobile Money fraud is common, and most of it relies on tricking people rather than hacking phones. Protect yourself with these habits:
- Never share your PIN, not with agents, family, friends or anyone claiming to be from MTN or Airtel. Genuine staff will never ask for it.
- Beware of "wrong transaction" calls and messages. A fraudster sends a fake SMS saying money was sent to you by mistake and asks you to return it. Always check your real balance first.
- Do not dial codes sent by strangers. Some scams ask you to dial a code that actually transfers money or changes your settings.
- Lock your phone with a PIN or fingerprint, and add a SIM PIN for extra protection.
- Change your PIN immediately if you think someone saw it.
- Report a lost phone fast. Call your network or visit a service centre to block the line and wallet until you get a replacement SIM.
Frequently asked questions
Can I register Mobile Money without a National ID?
Citizens are generally required to use their National ID or NIN. Foreign nationals and refugees may be able to use other accepted documents. Ask at a service centre for the current rules.
Can I have both MTN MoMo and Airtel Money?
Yes. Each wallet is linked to its own line, so you can register one on your MTN SIM and another on your Airtel SIM. You can also send money between networks.
What if I forget my Mobile Money PIN?
Visit a service centre with your National ID, or use the PIN reset option in the menu if it is offered. You will need to verify your identity.
Is my money safe if my phone gets lost?
Your money is tied to your number, not the handset. Block the line quickly and replace the SIM, and your balance will be there when you are back online.
Conclusion
Registering for Mobile Money takes only a few minutes once your SIM is registered and you have your National ID ready. Choose a strong PIN, start with small transactions and stay alert to common scams. Once you are confident, you will find Mobile Money useful for almost everything, including paying for online services such as domains and hosting.
